A weekly note on where the African art market moved, and what we make of it.

Who We Are

An index built to be checked

Every auction write-up compares African art to stocks and gold. Almost nobody keeps the price record that comparison implies. So we are building it: sourced, public, and checked by people. We are a small team and new at this, which is exactly why the method is public. Using it should not depend on trusting us.

What we value

Three things we actually do.

Provenance

Every figure links back to its sources, the model version behind it, and the person who approved it.

Never blended

We keep verified valuations and emerging momentum scores apart. Different data, different kind of estimate, different label.

Human review

Nothing publishes automatically. A person checks the sources and inputs first, every time.

What we've built

Four parts, one data set.

The Index

Coverage by market, and the method behind it, all in the open: how artists are scored and how to read the result.

The Valuation Engine

A hedonic model that puts verified prices in a range with a confidence interval, plus a momentum score for artists with a thinner auction record.

Advisory

A person who turns the same data into a shortlist for one specific collection.

Curator Review

The check every score goes through before it publishes. Someone reads the sources, the model inputs, and any doubt about the artist's identity, then logs the decision.
