OKN South Africa closed its September 9, 2026 revision at 1,393.94, up 20.65% over the trailing year. It's the deepest index Okasen runs, built on 341 transactions and 578 valuations. The 20 most recent transactions recorded on the platform are all South African, from two real August sales, and together they show what that depth actually looks like at the level of a single lot.

What the data shows

Ten of those 20 transactions, from Aspire Art's August 25 sale and Strauss & Co's August 19 sale, sold for under ZAR 10,000. Only four sold above ZAR 30,000. The top lot was a William Kentridge work at Aspire Art, ZAR 119,550. At the other end, a Cecily Sash piece in the same sale went for ZAR 956.

That range is the point. A 20.65% annual move sounds like a market having a good year on the strength of a few standout results. The transaction data underneath it says something more mundane and, honestly, more solid: a market where the typical recorded sale is a few thousand rand, not a headline lot.

The market context

The index's most-traded names carry that depth. Gregoire Boonzaier accounts for 32 of the transactions feeding the current vintage, more than any other artist on it. Kenneth Newman follows with 17, William Kentridge with 11, Edoardo Villa with 8, Peter Clarke with 7. These are established, verified-tier artists with long, repeated trading histories, not a handful of one-off results propping up an average.

Worth being precise about what caused what here: the 20.65% figure is a trailing-year calculation across the full 341-transaction base, not a read on these 20 August lots specifically. The August sales are a recent slice of that base, useful for seeing its texture, not the explanation for the annual number.

What it means and what to watch

An index that moves 20% on a base this deep is a different kind of signal than the same move on a thin one. The confidence band on this print, 1,228.10 to 1,582.17, is already the narrowest of any live OKN index, a direct consequence of having more data underneath it. What to watch isn't whether the headline number holds, it's whether the mix stays this broad: a market this dependent on a long tail of modest sales is a healthier one than a market carried by two or three big lots a quarter.
