Inside Africa's biggest art fair: 126 galleries, 30,000 visitors, and no sales total

The 13th Investec Cape Town Art Fair ran 20-22 February 2026 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre: 126 galleries from 34 cities, more than 490 artists, roughly 30,000 visitors including 10,000 VIPs. By every number the fair publishes, it was the biggest edition yet. The one number it doesn't publish is what any of it actually sold for.

What's known

The scale is real and well documented. The fair bills itself as the largest and leading international art fair on the African continent, and this year's exhibitor and visitor counts back that framing up. Galleries came from 34 cities. Attendance topped 30,000, a third of them VIPs. Work by Zanele Muholi at Southern Guild, Tsepisho Moropa at THK Gallery, Bonolo Kavula, and pieces at Namuso Gallery all drew coverage on site.

What's missing from every account of the 2026 edition is a sales total. One reviewer on the ground put the gap directly: appetite does not always translate into sales, and South African galleries with established collector bases were the ones operating from a position of confidence, an observation that only makes sense if plenty of exhibitors weren't. No aggregate revenue figure, no average lot price, no sell-through rate appears anywhere in the coverage this piece could find.

That gap matters for anyone trying to size the African art economy from the outside. Attendance is a real signal, it says collectors and dealers keep showing up, growing every year by the fair's own count. It is not a substitute for a sales figure, and treating it as one, even implicitly, is exactly the move worth naming and resisting. Until an organizer or an independent data provider publishes an actual number, the honest answer to "how much did Cape Town do this year" is that nobody outside the individual galleries knows.
