A dollar figure for East Africa's art market: $229,727, one November night in Nairobi

On 5 November 2025, Circle Art Agency in Nairobi ran the first joint edition of its annual East Africa auction with South African house Strauss & Co. The total: KES 29,666,980, USD 229,727. Fifty-two lots sold. Bidders logged in from 19 countries.

What's known

Circle Art has run this auction since 2013, building a secondary market for East African art from a standing start. The November 2025 edition was its first partnership with a continent-scale auction house rather than a solo Circle Art sale, and roughly 80% of the offered lots found a buyer.

The top lot was a story on its own. Tanzanian artist Kiure Francis Msangi's "Baobab Under the Red Moon" carried an estimate of KES 1 to 1.5 million. It sold for KES 3.5 million after a six-minute bidding war, more than double the high estimate. Other results landed in a tighter, more predictable band: Msangi's second work in the sale, plus paintings by Tanzania's Sam Joseph Ntiro, Uganda's Geoffrey Mukasa, Sudan's Miska Mohammed, and Kenya's Justus Kyalo and Beatrice Wanjiku, each selling between roughly KES 900,000 and KES 1.3 million.

Where Okasen data fits

Nowhere yet. East Africa isn't in Okasen's current regional index set, which covers Nigeria and South Africa. That gap is itself worth naming: a real, decade-old secondary market with its own auction house partnership just produced a documented result, and none of it is captured in any index today.

What it means

$229,727 for a full evening's sale is a fraction of what a single Sotheby's or Bonhams lot has fetched in stories already covered on this site. Say that plainly rather than inflate it. The actual news here isn't scale, it's infrastructure: a market that started from nothing in 2013 just got its first partnership with a house that operates across the continent, and pulled in bidders from 19 countries doing it.

That's the more useful way to read a young market's growth than chasing a single headline total. Watch whether the Strauss & Co partnership repeats next year, and whether the sell-through rate holds, before calling this a trend rather than one good night.
